Everyday Experiences and Infrastructure Vulnerabilities in Peri-Urban Ares of Dar es Salaam

The lecture I gave on the 2nd of May 2016 addressed the premises of understanding solid waste management and sanitation through everyday experiences. My contribution to the Lecture Series in Darmstadt was kindly supported by the Center for Interdisciplinary Africa Studies ZIAF.

My aim was to provide a first insight on social and organizational components connected to technical infrastructure and how this connection may influence positively or negatively the resilience of cities.

I focused on Dar es Salaam, Tanzania’s busiest commercial hub, contributing to 70%of the national domestic revenue. yet, Dar es Salaam is exposed to climate related events and vulnerable in particular to flash floods causing significant disruption to its critical infrastructure.
