Solid waste management remains a problem in developing countries especially in Africa where population growth exceeds the capacity of local government to meet the needs of citizens and institutions. The Kinondoni Municipality is among one of those municipalities in Tanzania that faces serious challenges in waste management, regardless of ongoing efforts and inputs by various stakeholders. Poor waste collection practices, lack of waste collection transfer stations, poor management of contractors and lack of awareness are among of the well-known drivers of inefficient solid waste management in the Municipality. The study looks in particular at the communication methods for solid waste management Kijitonyama ward in Mwenge. The research was conducted with a random sampling of 78 households using structured interviews, focus group discussions (FDG) and observations. The findings show that there are poor methods of communication between key actors, private contractor are perceived non-reliable and there is a lack of education and dissemination of information to residents. The study proposes the establishment of a better channel of communication using local ICT technologies and more transparency in information exchange.
